Mohamed Ali Alabaster Mosque in Cairo

Discover the magnificent Mohamed Ali Alabaster Mosque in Cairo, one of Egypt’s most famous historical landmarks. The mosque stands at the highest point of the Citadel of Saladin. Its grand domes and twin minarets create one of the most recognizable views of Cairo.

History of Mohamed Ali Mosque

Muhammad Ali Pasha commissioned the mosque in memory of his son, Tusun Pasha, who died in 1816.

Construction began in 1830 and continued until 1848. The mosque reached completion in 1857, during the reign of Said Pasha. Its architect, Yusuf Bushnak, came from Istanbul and took inspiration from the city’s Yeni Mosque.

Builders chose the site of earlier Mamluk structures inside the Cairo Citadel. They also used rubble from older buildings to raise the ground beneath the mosque.

Ottoman Architecture and Interior

The Mohamed Ali Alabaster Mosque showcases the beauty of Ottoman architecture. Its impressive central dome, smaller domes, and towering minarets dominate the surrounding skyline.

Inside, visitors can admire alabaster-covered walls, decorative lamps, and an impressive prayer hall. The mosque also offers panoramic views of Cairo, making it a favorite stop for history enthusiasts and photographers.
